About me

I received my bachelor's degree from Wheelock College in 2009. I have 15 years experience at Yale-New Haven Children's Hospital helping children and families at the most difficult times in their lives. I have worked in the pediatric intensive care unit, and various outpatient clinics. I am currently per diem at Yale, working wherever I am needed. I currently reside in Madison with my husband Devin, and three children.

Child life specialists are certified professionals that have a degree in child development, psychology, and/or related fields. In the healthcare environment, child life specialists collaborate with the medical team to provide children with diagnostic education, procedural preparation and support, relaxation techniques, sibling education, and end of life support.  Child life specialists help to normalize the hospital environment through developmentally appropriate play, and expressive opportunities to help the children cope during their hospital stay.  In the community, child life specialists continue to support children and their families to reduce the gap from hospital support to home.

 

 

 

 

Who would benefit from child life services

                   in the community:

  • A child experiencing life changes such as a divorce, new sibling, move, or other life changes

  • A child who has a sibling coming home for the first time from the Newborn Intensive Care Unit

  • A child who recently experienced a death, in need of grief and loss support, funeral preparation/support

  • A child who is actively experiencing a death

  • A child who is experiencing anxiety, behavioral challenges related to self-regulation

  • A child who has a strong fear of the medical environment, dental office, or doctor office

  • A child who needs to learn to swallow pills or medication 

  • A child with an acute or chronic medical illness

  • A child and his/her sibling experiencing a parent or loved one with an acute or chronic illness

  • A sibling of a child with a chronic or acute illness

  • A sibling of a child with special needs

Bereavement support, education, memory making, and accompanying to funeral if needed. 

Expressive

Education

Expressive art activities to increase coping and adjustments. Relaxation and coping techniques to reduce fear and anxiety. Therapeutic play session: medical play. 

Age- appropriate diagnostic education, hands on learning, and support. Support/preparation for upcoming dental procedures, vaccines. In addition, accompany the child to appointment if needed. School re-entries visit for a child with new diagnosis: cancer, diabetes, asthma, allergy. Helping children learn to swallow pills.

We have our wonderful daughter back! Our child has made such strides since she started working with Leah. Daily life in our house had become difficult as our daughter struggled to adjust to life changes.
